Identification
Adults can reach 90 m in length for 2.9 kg. Unmistakable. Most plumage black except for white thighs and tails. Long curved yellow-orange bill with large banana-shaped casque. This subspecies has a very short casque, pointed tip.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-East Asia, from south Thailand to Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo and Java. This subspecies is found in mainland Asia and Sumatra. Lives in primary evergreen and tall secondary forest, up to 1400 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE

Status : The species is still locally common but has declined in many other areas because of deforestation, habitat fragmentation and, locally, hunting.
