Identification
Adults can reach a length of 42 cm for a weight of 475 g. Large round head with very small, barely visible, tufts. Plumage mottled brown. Facial disk light brown to beige with yellow eyes, Belly light beige with dark vertical markings.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Europe, most of temperate Asia and north America. Species also found in Central and South America and nearby islands. Lives in open country, marshes, grasslands, savannas and forests, to 4000 m.

Status : The species has a huge range but is globally declining because of intensive agriculture, pollution, use of pesticides and overall loss of habitat.
