Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 36 cm. Their weight is unknown. Head back and wings dark rufous brown with white plumes near eyes and bill. Breast and belly white with strong black and dark rufous barring. Yellow bill.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in South America, mostly in the Andes from north Venezuela and Colombia to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Lives in humid montane evergreen forest and cloud forest, from 1700 to 3700 m.
