Identification
Adults grow to 51 cm in length for a weight of 800 g. Light grey facial disk with black edge and concentric circling grey lines. Horizontal brown and white lines on breast, brown stripes on belly. This subspecies is lighter colored.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to east and south Texas. The species occurs in South Canada, extreme west USA, most of east USA. Lives in mature coniferous and mixed forests with open country nearby, to 2500 m.

Status : The species is locally common but can be sensitive to disturbance.
