Identification
Adults can reach a length of 25 cm and a weight of 86 g. Females smaller than males. Long and pointed black bill, black marking on lores. Black plumage except from breast, head, nape and thighs which are bright reddish-orange.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in south America, from North-East Bolivia and South Brazil to Paraguay, Uruguay and north and east Argentina. Lives in tropical and subtropical lowland marshes with tall herbs.

Status : The species is globally uncommon and occurs at low densities. Argentinean population is vulnerable to habitat destruction.
