Identification
Adults can grow to 23 cm in length for a weight of 31 g. Upperparts brown, head black with upright crest. White cheeks and chin with red spot under eyes. Subspecies with small dark red tuft, clear belly with light brown flanks.

Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs from south Myanmar to south Vietnam and north Malaysia. Found in all kinds of semi open and open habitats except forests, to 2000 m.

Status : The species is very common throughout its range and has been introduced successfully in America. Southern populations depleted by trapping.
