Identification
Black head, white cheeks and throat, red iris. Breast and flanks black with white-edges on each feathers giving scaly effect, white belly. Subspecies with broad white tip to undertail, grayer flanks.

Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs from southern Myanmar and Thailand to Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Found in broadleaf evergreen forests with tall cover in hilly areas, from 500 to 1400 m.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species occurs in protected areas but has been badly affected by forest clearance, especially in Malaysia and Indonesia. Indonesian subspecies likely threatened by trapping for trade.
