Identification
Adults can reach a length of 23 cm for a weight of 71 g. Light blue eyes, ivory-colored bill with yellowish base and green tinge on forehalf of bill. Plumage is shiny black with bright scarlet rump. Subspecies with shorter wings and tail.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Central America, from north-east Honduras to most of Panama. Species also found from Darien (Panama) to south-west Ecuador. Lives mostly in humid forests, also clearings and plantations, up to 1100 m.
