Identification
Adults can reach up to 22 cm in length for a weight of 34 g. Male has black cap, back and wings with white areas on flight feathers. Silvery bill. Rest of plumage is bright golden orange. Female is considerably duller.

Range and habitat
The species breeds in central, south and eastern Canada, south to central USA. It winters in California, south-east USA, Cuba and central America. Lives in forest edges, woodlands, clearings parks and gardens, to 3000 m.

Status : The species has a large range and is capable to adapt easily to man-altered environments. It remains locally abundant to common.
