Adults reach a total length of 23 cm for a weight of 52 g. Strong black bill, long tail. Chin, breast and belly bright pink to red, crown and nape bright yellow. Rest of plumage black except for pinkish undertail. Black mask going from bill to neck. Subspecies with bright olive-yellow crown (not orange-brown).
Range and habitat
The subspecies occurs in western Africa, from South Mauritania and Senegal south to Gulf of Guinea, east to South-West Nigeria and North Cameroon. Lives in dry wooded savannas, dry woodlands, suburban parks and mangroves.

Status : The species is fairly common but could be vulnerable to overhunting, fires and habitat destruction. Subspecies helenae has very small range.
