Identification
Large and broad bright blue bill. Purple-pink to purple-red head, breast and belly. Male has thin black breast band. Black wings with rows of yellow feathers. Subspecies with yellow eyes.

Range and habitat
Subspecies endemic to Java, species also found from Thailand to Indonesia. Occurs in many forest types, sometimes plantations and gardens near forest, up to 1500 m.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is safe but this subspecies is more and more endangered as most of its habitat has been cleared below 1000 m. Possibly trapped for local trade but this needs to be studied.
