Identification
The species grows to 27 cm in length for a weight of 67 g. Long blue tail, plumage green with clearer belly. Big, flattened and broad dull greenish-yellow bill. Black head with yellow cheeks and chin. Subspecies with white and yellow collar.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found on Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. Species occurs from the Himalayas to south China, Indochina, Sumatra and North Borneo. Lives in all kinds of forests, often near pools or running water, to 2500 m.

Status : The species used to be common but is now getting rarer in most of its range because of habitat loss. Indonesian populations are depleted by the trade.
