Identification
The species reaches a full length of 18 cm for a weight of 50 g, female being lighter than male. Male is black with white band above eye and bright red throat. Female is browner with light red tinge on breast and black streaking on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in most of eastern Brazil and from South-east Peru and east Bolivia to Paraguay, Uruguay and the northern half of Argentina. Lives in humid and flooded grasslands, agricultural fields, up to 2500 meters.

Status : This species is relatively common to very common. It has expanded its range because of expansion of agriculture.
