Identification
The species grows to 18 cm in length, weigh unknown. Short tail, black bill, black face with two white markings. Breast black, belly white with rows of black spots. Dark grey back, tail and wings with white bars. Chestnut cap and crown.

Range and habitat
This species has a patchy range in south Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, south-east Philippines, Java and Lesser Sundas. Lives in dry and humid forests, woodlands and plantations, to 1300 m.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a highly fragmented range and is now nowhere common. It has been affected by deforestation and by unsustainable trapping levels.
