Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 23 cm. Bright yellow bill, reddish legs. Male has black head and breast, slaty-gray back, wings and tail, rufous breast, white belly patch. Female is duller and has black-spotted gray throat.

Range and habitat
This species occurs from extreme North-East India to Myanmar and south China, south to north Thailand and Vietnam. Lives in forests and woodlands, winters in mangroves, up to 2500 meters.

Status : This species is globally uncommon to scarce, only locally common. It is potentially threatened by habitat loss throughout its range.
