Identification
Adults can reach 26 cm in length. Dark grey bill, dark eyes, dark blue skin on eye-contour. Plumage dark brown, more chestnut on flanks, turning beige to orange-yellow on breast with vertical rows of black spots. Small clear line behind eyes.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Asia, from East India to nearby Myanmar and south China, then south to west Myanmar, north Thailand and north Vietnam. Lives in shrubs and edges of evergreen and bamboo forests, from 800 to 2000 m.

Status : The species has a fairly large range but is nowhere common. It is generally scarce, even in protected areas. Population trends need to be assessed.
