Identification
Adults can grow to 30 cm in length for a weight of 113 g. Black mask and throat, white cheeks. Cap and nape bluish-grey, rest of plumage grey, turning dull brown on back, wings and tail. Dullest brown subspecies with bluest tinge on cap.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in south-east China, nearby Laos and Vietnam. Species found from south China and Myanmar to south Cambodia and Vietnam. Lives in broadleaf and deciduous forests, second growth and scrub, to 1525 m.

Status : The species is widespread and common around its range. It is adaptable but is often caught for the songbird trade, especially in Vietnam.
