Identification
The species grows to 33 cm for a weight of 136 g. Fairly long tail, orange-rufous with black tips. Plumage rufous-brown with rows of black and white spots, lighter on breast. Black throat and cap. Subspecies with more black on face.

Range and habitat
Subspecies endemic to east-central China. The species occurs from Nepal and North-east India to north Myanmar and south China. Lives in undergrowth and bushes in montane open forests, from 1100 to 4100 m.

Status : The species seems to be fairly common in most of its range as its habitat seems to be preserved so far. Rarely caught for the trade.
