Identification
Adults can grow to 34 cm in length for a weight of 170 g. Brown cap, wings and tail, chestnut-orange flanks and nape, white throat and belly. White cheeks with black stripes, dark eyes. Subspecies with broad blue-grey and black collar.

Range and habitat
Subspecies endemic to east-central, eastern and south-east China. Species found from Myanmar to south Thailand and Vietnam, to eastern China. Lives in broadleaf and mixed forests, bamboo plantations, to 2000 m.

Status : The species is widespread and common around its range. It is adaptable but is often caught for the songbird trade, especially in Vietnam.
