Identification
The species grows to 23 cm in length for a weight of 53 g. Black bill, bluish eyes. Plumage olive-green with an orange-brown tinge, stronger on throat. Reddish wings, red face, grey crown. Subspecies with darker and less barred tail.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found in south China, north Laos and north Vietnam. Species also occurs in east Myanmar, north-west Thailand and nearby China. Lives in ravines, open forests and bamboo jungles, from 1400 to 2200 meters.
