Identification
Adults reach 28 cm in length for a weight of 106 g. Long but thin black bill. Plumage orange-brown, brighter on breast. Bright red wings and tail. Black throat. Silvery-grey patches on forehead and cheeks, separated by a black line. Subspecies with orange-brown back and lower breast plumage, black on throat more extensive.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in eastern Asia, in south-central and south China (Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi). Species also found in nearby north Vietnam (Tonkin). Lives in broadleaf evergreen forest, secondary growth, scrub, from 900 to 3150 m.

Status : The species has a relatively small range but is locally commoner than thought, especially in China. Scarcer in Vietnam.
