Identification
Adults can grow to about 30 cm in length for a weight of 89 grams. Fairly long and thick black bill, long tail. Chestnut brown plumage with black and white spots on wings. Breast and belly beige-white with dark round spots.

Range and habitat
The species breeds from south Canada to southern eastern half of USA. Subspecies found from southeast Canada to Gulf states (east of Rocky Mountains). Non breeding (wintering) population found in north-east Mexico. Lives in woodlands, gardens and shrublands with dense undergrowth.

Status : The species is quite common and has a large range. Some populations are declining because of poisoning by pesticides and loss of habitat.
