Identification
Largest barbet species, growing to 35 cm in length for a weight of 295 g. Massive yellow to horn-colored bill with black tip. Head dark blue, brown back and breast. Flanks yellow with rows of dark green dots forming stripes, red rump.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found in Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and south China. Species occurs from the Himalayas to eastern India, Indochina and South China. Lives in forests, wooded mountain valleys, sometimes in gardens, to 3000 m.

Status : The species is quite common as long as there are enough fruiting trees and breeding sites available. Occurs in many protected areas.
