Identification
Total length of 26 cm for a weight of 99 g. The species has black and white irregular bands on wings and undertail. Breast and belly light beige. Orange-red patch on nape, yellow forehead. Male has bright red crown patch.

Range and habitat
The species occurs from south-central USA (Oklahoma) to Texas, south to northern Mexico. Lives in semi arid and arid areas with sparse trees and woodland, to 2500 m.

Status : The species is locally abundant and usually common within its range. Habitat alteration can cause local declines but the species is adaptable.
