Identification
The species can reach a length of 27 cm for a weight around 220 g. Wings, lower back and belly dark brown, upper back dark purple-violet. Breast, neck and head dark grey, cheeks whitish with wavy black line. Red eye contour.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the uplands of southern Central America, in Costa Rica and Panama, east to Darien. Lives in dense montane wet forests with cool temperatures, up to 2600 m.

Status : There is currently no population monitoring done. The species remains common in places but very local and could be threatened by deforestation.
