Identification
Adults can grow to 32 cm in length for a weight of 260 g. Nominate subspecies is unmistakable with its almost only shiny black plumage with purplish tinge. Undertail with yellow and red tinge. Bill black, legs dark grey-black.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in western Papua New Guinea and in nearby Misool island. This subspecies is found on west Vogelkop peninsula, Salawati and Batanta. Lives in mangroves, coastal plantations, forest edges and savannas.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : This species is qualified as Restricted Range by Birdlife. It is still common. Its populations need monitoring because of overtrapping for trade.
