Identification
The species grows to 41 cm in length for a weight of 113 g. Wings and tail green, rest of plumage red. Nape black with a row of blue feathers. Subspecies with long yellow tail steamers. Female with yellow rump. Black color morph known.

Range and habitat
The subspecies is found in the mountains of New Guinea from Weyland to eastern Highlands. Species found in all mountain ranges of New Guinea. Lives in montane forests, including disturbed forests, from 1800 m to 3500 m.

Status : This species remains locally common within its range but is often trapped for its beautiful feathers used by local tribes. Also traded locally alive.
