Identification
Darkest subspecies, plumage dark brown, nearly black with grey-brown undertail. Dusky bill, turning horn-colored when breeding. Females don’t become bald during breeding season.

Range and habitat
Species endemic to Madagascar and introduced to Mauritius. Subspecies occurs in north and east Madagascar, in both dense humid and dry forests, mangroves and savannas, to 2050 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : Still locally common but more and more threatened by loss of habitat. Hunted because considered as a pest and caught for trade. Remains rare under human care, subspecies not always ID’d.
