Identification
Adults can grow to 42 cm in length for a weight of 615 g. Male green with red flanks and blue flight feathers. Female bright red. Subspecies smaller, smaller bill, male yellow-green, female has blue belly and lower breast, broader blue eye-ring.

Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs from Admiralty Islands and Bismarck Archipelago to most of Solomon Islands. Species found from east Indonesia to Solomon Islands and extreme north Australia. Lives in the canopy of all kinds of wooded habitats, up to 1900 meters.

Status : This species has a large range and is relatively common in most of it except on Sumba island where the local subspecies is highly threatened.
