Identification
The species grows to 33 cm in length for a weight of 260 g. Black cap, yellow eyes, dark orange bill, green wings. Rest of plumage bright red and dark blue. Subspecies with red breast and flanks and more red on nape and upper back.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in most of western and central-north New Guinea. Species found from West Papuan Islands to most of New Guinea. Lives in lowland and hill forests, freshwater swamps, to 1600 m.

Status : This species has a large range and, although uncommon in the wild, remains safe and one of the commonest big lories within its range.
