Identification
Adults grow to 62 cm in length for a weight of 258 g. Massive bright red bill, clear eyes. Female nearly entirely green, male with long tail. Large subspecies with broad black and pink collar, bluish-grey tinge on cheeks and breast.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found from east Afghanistan to north India and Bangladesh. Species occurs from east Afghanistan to parts of India and Indochina. Lives in dry and moist forests, woodlands and plantations, locally to 1600 m.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species still has a large range but is often caught for trade locally. In countries such as Thailand, nest robbery has become a major threat.
