Identification
Adults grow to 39 cm in length for a weight of 490 g. Black bill, clear eyes. Most of face is white. Plumage grey with light edges on nape and breast feathers. Belly and rump paler grey. Upper and undertail bright red.

Range and habitat
Species found from Ivory Coast to Kenya and Tanzania, south to Angola and DR Congo. Other subspecies endemic to Principe Island in the Gulf of Guinea. Lives in lowland forests, woodlands, savannas and suburban gardens, to 2200 m.

Status : The species has been undergoing a rapid decline because of habitat loss coupled with unsustainable capture rate, especially for local trade.
