Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 58 cm for a wingspan of 141 cm and a weight of 1.4 kg. Black bill with yellow cere. Plumage white to light beige on breast and belly, with mottling, rufous-brown on head and tail, dark brown on wings.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in south US and north-central Mexico. Species found from Alaska and north-west Canada to Panama and most of Greater Antilles. Lives in woodlands, forests, deserts, agricultural land, urban areas.

Status : The species is probably the commonest member of its genus in the wild in North America. Still locally hunted but population globally increasing.
