Identification
The species grows to 58 cm for a weight of 610 g. Short dark crest on nape. Crown black, rest of head brown. Dark brown wings. Beige-brown breast with vertical rows of black spots. Brown and white horizontal bands on belly and thighs.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found from south Thailand and Malaysia to Sumatra, Borneo and Bangka Island. The other subspecies is endemic to Nias island. Lives in lowland primary and old secondary forests, riverine forests, to 1000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is globally uncommon and is likely in overall decline because of long term deforestation in all of its range. Nias island subspecies could be extinct.
