Identification
Adults reach a length of 65 cm for a weight up to 1.5 kg, females being slightly heavier than males. Plumage entirely black with chestnut areas on breast and wings. White bill, naked head pink and yellow with bluish crown. Black cheek band.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in central and south America from south and east Mexico to Colombia, south to Peru, east to Guianas, Brazil, Bolivia and north Argentina. Lives in open habitats, sometimes forest edges and swamps, up to 2000 meters.

Status : The species is apparently numerous in its very large range. Recorded from protected areas. No apparent threat to its survival.
