Identification
Small plover reaching 18 cm in length for a weight of 49 g. Wings, back and crown brown, white belly, white forehead with white band running along crown. Grey cheeks, white breast with double black collar. Red eyering and bill. Subspecies with lighter grey face.

Range and habitat
Africa from Gabon and DR Congo to Tanzania (north to Eritrea and Egypt), south to South Africa. Species also found in Madagascar. Lives on gravelly, stony and muddy banks of rivers, lakes and streams.

Status : The species remains common throughout its large range and has benefited from creation of artificial wetlands.
