Identification
Adults can reach up to 25 cm in length. Stout body with large head (swollen at back of jaws) and broadly rounded snout. Coloration ranges between black and light grey with bright yellow blotches located irregularly on sides of back.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from south-eastern Canada to most of the eastern half of USA, west to Texas and Iowa. Lives in forests and woodlands near swamps and pools.

Status : The species has a large range and remains locally common. It is considered safe as it can live in slightly altered habitats.
