Identification
Largest species of its genus, reaching up to 18 cm in length. Males are smaller than females. Smooth skin, pronounced longitudinal back ridge, large head, laterally compressed tail. Black with occasional orange marks and speckles.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the Ryukyu archipelago, located south of Japan. This subspecies is found on Amami-Oshima, Kakeroma, Uke and Yoro islands. Lives in forests and grasslands, on wet floor, near pools and streams.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is endangered by habitat loss, particularly with the creation of roads and constructions. Introduction of tilapias in streams is also a threat.
