Notes : No subspecies known. This is part of a species complex, its taxonomy is still problematic and under study.

Identification
Adults can grow to about 18 cm in length. Fairly large newt with an elongated paddle-shaped tail and conspicuous skin-fold on lip sides. Skin very smooth. Brown with orange spots on belly and row of red spots on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in south-central China, in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian. Lives in hilly streams with low gradient, from 50 to 1800 meters above sea level.

Status : The species is very common to abundant within its range but it can be affected locally by water pollution and occasional collecting for food.
