Identification
Adults can reach a length of 38 cm. Elongated body with a near square section and vertical forehead. Small mouth with red lips. Snout is slightly elongated. Coloration is beige-brown with dark spotting on back, flanks and fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic ocean from Southern Florida to the northern coasts of Gulf of Mexico. Mostly found in sandy areas near reefs, from surface to 70 meters deep.

Status : The species’ status hasn’t been assessed by IUCN but it seems to be secure so far, despite being not common. May be vulnerable to habitat loss.
