Identification
Adults can reach 100 cm in length for a weight of 5,3 kg. Snout thick and relatively short, getting longer when adult. Elongated body. Coloration mostly dull brown with slight iridescent golden tinge visible with flashlight. Belly slightly clearer.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in most big river systems of western and central Africa, from Senegal to Central African Republic and DR Congo. Lives mostly in rivers and streams.

Status : This species has a large distribution but is globally threatened by habitat pollution and degradation. Locally caught for trade in big numbers.
