Identification
Adults can reach at least 17 cm in body length. Long body, head with very long (near body-sized) barbels. Ground coloration is light grey with black spotting and markings. Juveniles display large black blotches. Fins are lightly spotted.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, from south Venezuela, Guianas and Colombia to Bolivia and Brazil. Lives in shallow flowing waters on muddy and sandy substrates.

Status : The species is quite common in most of its range but might still be threatened by over-collection for the aquarium trade.
