Identification
This is one of the largest freshwater fishes known, growing to 3 meters long for a weight of 350 kg. Barbels not visible, eyes located below mouth level. No filament extensions on fins. Body mostly black fins grey, throat slightly clear.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia and is endemic to the Mekong river basin, occurring in the river itself and nearby Tonle Sap Lake and river. Lives only in large rivers and lakes.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species was abundant during the early XXth Century but has experienced a decline of more than 80%. Its spawning grounds are now being lost.
