Identification
Adults can reach about 1 m in length for a maximum weight of 30 kg. Torpedo-shaped body with big mouth. Coloration silvery when young becoming yellow. Tail and fins yellow orange, black dots on flanks. Head profile rounded.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-America, in the southern part of the Amazon river basin, mostly in Bolivia and south-central Brazil. Lives in tropical ponds and slow-moving rivers.

Status : The species’ status hasn’t been assessed so far but it seems to remain common despite intensive fishing which looks like being localized.
