Identification
Adults can grow to 11 cm in length. Laterally compressed body with high back profile, round belly and concave forehead. Coloration is silvery with a losange-shaped black marking on tail peduncle. Red fins. Dark-edged flank scales.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, in the Amazon and La Plata river basins, from Brazil to Guianas, east to Peru and Bolivia. Lives around muddy and sandy bottoms around slow-moving waters, with vegetation.

Status : The species has yet to be assessed but it has a large range and is now bred in farms which takes off pressure from international trade.
