Identification
The species grows to 76 cm in length for a weight of 6 kg. Small bluish-tinged head. High dorsal profile with pronounced hump. Coloration usually dark blue-black with shiny scales and fading rows of large black round blotches.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in most of the big river basins of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Central African Republic, east to Ethiopia and the Nile basin. Lives in large freshwater rivers and their tributaries, lakes.
