Identification
Adults can reach up to 30 cm in length. Elongated body with slightly arched back. Coloration is bright yellow with 10 broad vertical black bars from head to tail. Some bars are splited in two. Rusty-orange patch on throat. Pointed caudal fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, mostly in the Amazon river basin, from Venezuela and Guianas to Brazil and Paraguay. Lives in rocky areas of fast flowing rivers.

Status : The species seems to be at least locally common within its range. Often caught for fish trade.
