Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 119 cm for a weight of 22.7 kg. Cylindrical body, big head with thick lips and small barbel below lower lip. Brown or grey back, whiter belly. Vermiculated pattern (not always visible) on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in northern Pacific Ocean, from North Japan and Korea to California (commoner in northern parts of range). Lives around continental shelf and upper slopes, down to 250 m.

Status : Despite being hunted for food in most parts of its range, the species’ status hasn’t been assessed and it is thought to be globally stable.
