Identification
Adults can grow to 30 cm. Broad black band on gill coverts, big eye with broad black band. Coloration orange-red with red edges to scales. Fins with red and white edges and black blotch on tip. Differs from M. murdjan with yellow dorsal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from east Africa and South Africa to Clipperton and Galapagos islands, north to south Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in subtidal reef flats to outer reef slopes, from 3 to 159 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range. It is exploited for subsistence in parts of it but this is not considered a threat at this time.
