Identification
The species can reach 60 cm in length but is usually smaller. Round head profile with very big eyes. Coloration orange-red with dark red edges to flank scales. Dark diagonal bar on gill coverts, fins with white and bright red edges.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea, Gulf of Oman and East Africa to Oceania, to south Japan and north Australia. Lives in reef flats, shallow lagoons and seaward reefs, down to 50 m.
